Akupanel – installation guide

In the downloadable PDF you will find detailed step-by-step instructions for installing the acoustic panels.

Or you can follow the individual points below.

Steps 5 and 6 - cutting the panels to size - need only be carried out if necessary. If no cutting is necessary, you will be finished after step 4.

The things you may need:

  • A saw - either a circular saw or a normal hand saw
  • A screwdriver
  • Screws for the Akupanels and the underlying battens
» Black screws approximately 1.37 inches. for mounting the Akupanels
» (If necessary) Small screws (approximately 0.59mm.) for fixing the
slats on the felt after cutting the panels in length
» Screws and plugs for mounting the battens on the wall
  • Battens/furring strips (we recommend 1.77 inches in thickness)
  • Insulation (1.77 inches in thickness)
  • Pencil

Step 1: Preparing the wall.

Start by preparing the wall. Clean the wall and remove any screws, nails and other
obstacles on the wall.

Step 2: Mounting the underlying battens/furring strips

The first thing you need to do is to mount battens on the wall. This enables you to drill the screws through the felt of the Akupanel and into the battens. Depending on the wall you will need screws that fits accordingly to your wall type.

We recommend that you keep a distance of 24 inches between the battens. Using the "batten" method on the wall enables you to insert insulation between the battens so that the wall will obtain the highest attainable sound dampening result.

Alternatively, you can choose to install the Akupanels directly on the wall using screws or glue/adhesive. The method should resolve most sound problems while saving time.

Note: If the acoustic panels are glued directly to the wall, you may damage the wall and/or the panels if the panels are detached.

Step 3: Insert insulation between the battens

Insert a approximately 1.77 inches of insulation between the battens.

Step 4: Mounting the Akupanels on the wall

Mount the Akupanels on the wall by drilling the black screws (1.37 inches) through the black felt and into the battens. We recommend 15 screws per Akupanel.

The panels have a felt side and a wooded slat side. When you mount the panels in continuation of each other you need to make sure that the felt side from one panel is flush with the slatted side on another panel so that there is about 0.47 inches between the slats in the jointing.

Step 5: Cutting the Akupanels in width

When reaching the end of the wall you might need to adjust the panels in order to make the panels fit. Finally, mount the last piece on the wall - again by using black screws through the felt.

Modifying the width of an Akupanel is done by cutting the felt acoustic panel using a knife.

Affix the last acoustic panel to the wall by driving black screws through the felt.

Step 6: Cutting the panels in length.

If you need to adjust the height of your Akupanels, you can cut the panels using a circular saw or a hand saw. Mark the cutting line on the panel with a pencil. Once you have cut the Akupanel it is a good idea to re-fasten the slats to the felt. This is done by drilling a screw (approximately 0.5 inch) into the slats from the back (through the felt the back of the panels).

Your wall is now fully installed.
The acoustics of the room are now much better and with the reverberation removed, you can relax and listen to the words of your guests more easily.
